   The beginning of a
Dynasty.
   The
Pyscho Fruitbats with Attitudes were born.  Changing our names from the Red Dragons, was a defiant act and protest to the college's third sanction in three semesters.  We were not allowed to use facility fields, and practiced at the local playgrounds and parks.  Out of bounds were the swings to the see-saw, yet this did not effect our performance on the field.  It just made us play angry.  And sparked some interesting T-shirt Logos, that might go down in history, as some of the most offensive ever put together.  Although I wish I still had one or two.

     From
Fall 1989-Spring 1992 Cortland Rugby was UNDEFEATED for SIX straight semesters, in NYSRC league games/playoffs/Championship at Delaware Park  and NYSRC Upstate Tournament, which in those days were six games, three on Saturday and three on Sunday at Orchard Park.  We lost only two games during that span, both playing in the NRU playoff qualifiers.  In Fall 1990, we played West Point, leading 6-0 at half-time, but were unable to match their excellent endurance, loosing 6-12.  West Point lost fighting for the National Championship that year, as the second best team in the Nation.

     The idea of
wearing dresses to our first away game of the Fall season was a direct result of boredom.  After winning, semester after semester, new tactics were needed to continue the dominance and success.  Plus it was fun!  Wearing dresses started in the late 1989, but became a tradition in the 90's.  We did travel to away games in a Ryder Truck, upon arrival ran out and climbed the nearest trees preforming our best ape renditions.  Like the Berserker's of Viking legend, intimidation was all a part of the performance.

Although we partied very hard, we took the sport seriously, selecting five Captains, to meet every Thursday to select the best 15 players, out of a team of 40-50 men.  Every Wednesday our A's vs B's games, made Saturday rugby seem like a picnic.  Players fought tooth and nail, for a starting position, for our A players never left a game, unless carried off.

Revised Disbandment
According to new sources, C-State continued to play until the year 2000.  During Spring 1998 the team was suspended, but continued to play against Men's teams, and changed their name to the
Cortland State Penitentiary.
