| Living in Ithaca, I was increasing involved in the 2005 - 2006 Alumni Games, and when I discovered that the team was without a coach I quickly volunteered. I told the players that I would only be available for one season, but soon found myself, engulfed by the game and more importantly the players. I asked three former Cortland Rugby players, Bob Johnson, Boner and Spics, what would be their best advice for coaching, together the three have over 60 years of rugby expereince. Fitness, defense and ball control. Well, I think the boys bought into the philosophy, allowing only 17 points in 8 games. They ran hard, played hard and are worthy of respect. More importantly I have a "team" not a bunch of individuals. These men are selfless and together will bring pride and tradition to Cortland State Rugby. The game has changed, not only with rules, methods, the "modern game" which is often used, but College rugby is a different world, more importantly D1. The competition is playoff-like every weekend, each team learning from last week's games, making each team even harder and harder to beat. I wouldn't want it any other way, its a rush. I wish I was 22 again, playing with these young men, who are as tough as we ever were. I am proud to be their Coach and honored to play along side them from time to time. |
